“The perfect marriage? Or the perfect lie?”
There is something about couples with secrets that intrigues me, and B.A. Paris captures this unsettling tale with a flawless blend of fear and hope. Behind Closed Doors follows the story of Grace and her husband, Jack, a respected attorney. On the surface, they’re the perfect couple. They have a big, beautiful house, wear fancy clothes, drive nice cars, and are hopelessly in love. But… they have a secret.
This is the type of novel that gives you vibes from the get go, but takes its time revealing information to the reader. You get the idea that Grace and Jack are hiding something, and something big, but you don’t know exactly what until a few chapters in. The pacing of this novel is to be applauded. The book jumps between the past and the present, and, at times, the two timelines overlap.
B.A. Paris writes in what I would describe as “simple” language. She doesn’t use fancy words or lengthy and confusing sentence structures. She’s simply telling the story, and does so in a captivating way. I finished this book in two days (starting at 11p.m. and reading well into the early hours of the following day), because I couldn’t put it down. I had to know what happened next.
This was a debut novel by B.A. Paris and I cannot wait to read more. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys twisty, page-turning thrillers that can be finished in one sitting.
